Packing Your Backpack for Europe

Millions of people head off to Europe on a backpacking trip through a budget travel guide each year. Having done it five times, I can tell you that it will be one of the best times of your life. That being said, you must take some things with you. On the positive side, you don’t need that much.

Europe is not another planet. I mention this because you should keep in mind you can buy everything there if you forget it here. The first time people go backpacking in Europe, they tend to completely overdue it on the packing front. You are not climbing Mount Everest, so don’t overdue it!

The first things to pack are clothes. Depending on where you are going, you may need clothes for warm weather or cold. Assuming it is warm, you need a couple of shirts that are wrinkle resistant. You will buy others there, so don’t pack ten. You also will need a pair of shorts and a bathing suit. If you plan on visiting museums and churches, you will need a pair of long pants to get into many of them. Pack something light that is wrinkle resistant.

For your feet, you can load up on socks because they do not take much space. You will need some sandals and then a pair of something comfortable. Some prefer hiking boots, but I usually went with cross trainers. Whatever you do, make sure you get used to the shoes before heading off. You are going to walk a lot, so blisters from new shoes can be a killer.

On the personal front, you need a brush, toothpaste and any medicinal needs. That is it. You can buy anything else you need as you need it. There is zero point to lugging around shampoo all over Europe. Murphy’s law says it will open in your backpack! Keep it super simple.

While your trip will result in great memories, they will fade in time. Take a camera and, of course, one of our travel journals. Car-Hire. When you organise a package holiday many companies will include a car. The only problem is they do not include insurances. These are the most expensive part of the car-hire deal. Shop around and you will discover you can get a far better deal by yourself, and often you can get a large and better car for less money. A few companies even offer all-inclusive car-hire deals, which really do include all your insurances in one low price. This will save you a lot.

Losing one’s luggage is a definite headache for travelers. To avoid such mishaps, the following pointers are recommended:

Travel with only carry-on luggage. You take your bags with you inside the cabin, so you do not have to worry about them being lost or stolen. Generally, a passenger is allowed two pieces of carry-on luggage, one for the overhead bin and the other for under the seat. Additional items such as umbrellas and baby strollers are also permitted.

They can be found all over the UK, even in small towns that are normally not considered to offer tourist attractions. You can really get a good deal staying in an independent hotel, but you need to take care that you choose one that is clean and has good service. This can be a gamble as it is all up to the individual proprietor. Most of these accommodation range from $40 to $100+.

Hostels – These are a great option for people traveling in the UK on a budget, especially young people. You usually just get a bed in a shared room and very little more. They are uncommon outside of London, but if you look around you can find them in other major cities. The average cost is about $20 a night but prices vary.

Bed And Breakfasts – These establishments are something of a UK tradition and are very popular with UK citizens who travel within the country during their vacation. A typical bed and breakfast is basically a large house that rents out rooms to tourists. They are very personal and the owners normally do what they can do make you feel at home. Taxis are cheap. Flabbergastingly cheap. If you don’t know what “flabbergastingly” means… look it up. But realize that taxis are very cheap. Especially when shared with 3 other people. But don’t expect to realize available taxis on a Friday or Saturday night – they are impossible! Queues in Pl. Catalunya can range from 15 minutes to 2 hours on a Friday or Saturday night..

Buses are easy to use and get around. Nightbuses don’t run that frequently though. Getting the bus from the airport to Pl. Catalunya costs 3.65 euros and the average journey time is about 25 minutes.

The metro stations are HOT! In the summer, they are boiling hot. Girls should walk around in their bikini tops – that should be made a rule. But the metro itself has air conditioning and is usually on time. And everything is pretty much within half an hour reach. A 3 month pass for under-21 year olds costs 100 euros, which is excellent. And the pass works for bus and metro. For over 21 year olds it is 112 euros, so there is not much of a difference. Overall, if you travel through discount travel deal, it is cheap, reliable and hot. Boiling hot. And that’s all I have to say about that.

The Prostitutes

They are out there! In the heart of Barcelona, flooding the Ramblas (and not only) after 2am, totally transforming Barcelona from day to night. If you are a group of guys walking through the Ramblas, it is guaranteed that at least one of them will grab you and ask, very blatantly, if you want sex. Our advice: Run. The most likely thing is that they will go for your pocket to try and steal your wallet or mobile. Or they will take you somewhere dodgy and steal from you there. Either way, don’t do it. You will look like nothing but a traveler of a discount vacation package, and people will make fun of you. I realize I will!!

The Street Beer Sellers

There are dozens of Pakistani/Indian beer sellers around Bairro Gotico, Raval and the Ramblas. Remember: They are your friends, not your enemies. There is no reason to be afraid of the,. I have yet to hear a story of anyone getting robbed by a beer seller. They sell beers for 1 euro each and 5 euros for a pack of 6. If you know how to talk to them, youll be able to bargain it down to 70cents a beer. They swear they are not part of a mafia. Yet they share beers and change constantly. The truth is out there…

Cigarettes And Tobacco

Since the first day of 2006, an “anti-smoking law” has been put in place by the Government. However, it doesn’t obligate any establishment to ban smoking. Instead, it gives them the option to choose whether they want to ban smoking or not and notify the public with a banner outside the establishment. Needless to say, you can smoke pretty much everywhere. Cigarettes are cheaper in specialised tobacco shops (”Tabacs”). The only other place to buy cigarettes are from machines in bars and certain kiosks.

Location – If a hotel is located out of the way then you will need to factor in the extra travel costs that you will incur. If you have your own transport, then this is not such a big deal, though you will still be paying at least a bit extra for gas, but if you are relying on taxis and public transport then it is certainly something to consider. Ask about a free shuttle service too, as some hotels provide one whereas some do not.

Facilities – If two hotels are charging the same price for a room but one has, say a swimming pool and a gym, then that one is better value than the one without the extra facilities. Similarly, if you do not plan to use any extra facilities then staying in a hotel that has them will mean that you will probably be paying extra unnecessarily.

Hotel food – If you are planning on staying in a hotel for several days, chances are good that you might want to grab a meal in the hotel’s restaurant. Most hotel restaurants overcharge for the convenience of eating in the same building that you are staying in. The question is: How much is your hotel overcharging? When comparing two or more hotels, ask how much a simple meal such as a hamburger and fries costs. If the cost is over $12.00, you are being overcharged. That fact alone might help you decide which hotel is the better value.

Breakfast – Find out if breakfast is included in the price you pay and also what is included in the breakfast. Some hotels provide just coffee and toast for breakfast whereas others provide an ‘eat as much you want’ style buffet. If you are not planning to have breakfast, then ask if you can get a discount off of the advertised price.

Check out time – Different hotels have different check out times. Look into this before booking a room. You may not want to leave your room before 11am, noon or 1pm. If checkout is very early, see if you can negotiate a discount. If you get into the room very late the night before, see if you can get a later check out time. Hotels will sometimes compromise. Some hotels will also hold your luggage for you while you site see, either earlier than your check in time or later than your check out time.

You can travel through Venice by foot but who would leave Venice without partaking of a gondola trip?

London is, arguably, the most diverse city on the planet. More languages are spoken by its inhabitants than in any other city in the world and it is a real melting pot of cultures. There are a huge range of things to keep you entertained in London – theaters, museums, art galleries and famous buildings. You think that you can every major city has those, but what is on offer in London is a cut above what you will find elsewhere. It is a paradise for shoppers, music lovers and sports too.
