Tips For Choosing A Hotel

Filed under: Travel — freetraffic @ 4:03 am

What vacationer is happy, when arriving at their lodging, to find that the hotel is not well kept or that their room has been given to someone else? Hotel reviews on the internet are one of the very best ways to judge the quality of a hotel without actually seeing it in person. There are many, many sites that not only give stars for quality but also offer reviews written by people who have stayed in the hotel recently. What are most travelers seeking?

Cleanliness and friendliness: Certainly you want your hotel to be clean and have a friendly staff, no matter the price of the hotel. If you’re willing to spend more you may be able to procure a room in a hotel with a concierge. A concierge will be able to tell you the best restaurants to eat in and the best places to visit.

Security: 24/7 front desk staff is a must in a good hotel. Good hotels also have full security staff. Key cards are the best keys. They can be discarded when a lodger checks out and they can be replaced if they are lost.

Cost: Cost is perhaps the most important aspect of hotel accommodations to many travelers. If you visit a hotel review site you will be offered a range of prices that will give you a good idea of what you should expect to pay. If you must choose the most inexpensive room, you must. But consider paying a little more to get some extras like a hotel dining room or a pool for the kids.

Convenient location: Unless you want to rent a car, you probably want a hotel in a location that’s near restaurants and attractions. A hotel within walking or cab distance of these is a good way to save money. However, if you want to rent a car, be sure that you can conveniently get back and forth to where the car rental location is or that the car rental company will deliver the car.

The best way to book a clean, safe, and friendly hotel room in a convenient location is to do some internet research and then call the hotel and check on certain aspects that interest you. Be sure to specify if you plan to arrive late. Get the name of the person you speak with and have them email you a confirmation so you can check on the details of your reservation before you arrive. And have a wonderful time!

August 25, 2010
Filed under: Travel — freetraffic @ 12:33 am

London is full of wonderful places to visit and things to see but there are several attractions that every visitor must see.

- Big Ben: is the nickname of the bell in the clock at the north end of Westminster Palace. It is the largest chiming four faced clock in the world. It’s the third largest free-standing clock tower in the world.

- The Tower of London: is on the north bank of the River Thames and was founded in 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest. William the Conqueror built the White Tower, from which the castle takes its name. It has been used as a prison since 1100. The tower is a series of buildings set within two concentric circles of walls and a moat. The Tower of London is very important to the history of England.

- London Bridge: spans the River Thames. It connects London City and Southwark in central London. The present bridge opened in 1793, one of many bridges to have appeared at the same site. In fact, a bridge has existed at or near the present site since the time of the Roman occupation, which was nearly 2,000 years ago.

- The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace: is possibly London’s number one tourist attraction. The palace itself was built in 1702 as the London home of the Duke of Buckingham. Buckingham Palace’s state rooms are open from late July to September. The Queen’s Guard and the Queen’s Life Guard are the two groups of infantry and cavalry that guard the royal residences in London.

- The London Eye, or the Millennium wheel: is an enormous Ferris wheel that stands 443 feet or 135 metres tall. It is the number one paid tourist attraction in the UK and the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe. It can be found at the western end of Jubilee Gardens, in the borough of Lambeth, on the South bank of the River Thames.

- Princess Diana’s Memorial: can be found in the southwest corner of Hyde Park. It was designed to express her love of children. Princess Diana’s Memorial was officially opened in July 2004 by Queen Elizabeth II.

Today’s visitors to London can pick and choose from a long list of things to do and see while visiting England’s capital city. The sites on the above list are just a prelude to days and nights of exciting sightseeing in the city of London.

Aussie Micronations

August 22, 2010
Filed under: Travel — freetraffic @ 11:34 pm

Great Australians in history. A daunting task for any scholar. Straight away, of course, one must mull over exactly what it is that makes one an Australian. Is Zalman Silber an Australian? He is actually a New Yorker, but responsible for one of Sydney’s most exciting attractions, the Skywalk, not to mention one of Melbourne’s, too, called The Edge. The former is generally a glass-floored catwalk a thousand feet above ground that offers visitors not only a bird’s-eye view of Sydney but a bird’s-nerve feel, too, what with gusting winds necessitating cable tethers for visitor safety. The latter is a glass enclosure that juts out from the top of the Eureka Tower, providing stunning panoramic views every which way you look.

Both are premier attractions for their cities, bringing in tourist dollars by the fistful every day. Does that make Zalman Silber a great Australian? Does that make him Australian at all? After all, he’s just a businessman – but the bottom line is that he has benefited Sydney and Melbourne tremendously, providing employment and tax revenue while bolstering the cities’ global profile.

So just what makes for an Australian? Many are those who have only been born in Australia but really made their mark elsewhere. Then there are those who also denigrate their country of origin, Australia, but are still, in the final analysis, considered Australians. Even someone like Rupert Murdoch, who renounced his Australian citizenship in order to advance certain business interests of his, is still thought as Australian!

Indeed, one Leonard Casley even went so far as to secede his ranch from Australia and go on to declare war on Australia! It’s no joke: the Principality of Hutt River actually issues its own visa (hours of operation are ten to four) and postage. And Hutt River isn’t the only micronation on the island-continent; Australia also hosts – if that is the right word – the Province of Bumbunga, the Sovereign State of Aeterna Lucina, the Grand Duchy of Avram, the Independent State of Rainbow Creek, the Empire of Atlantium, the Principality of Marlborough, the Principality of Snake Hill, the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands, the United Federation of Koronis (which is merely based in Australia, claiming sovereignty only over the Koronis Family of Asteroids), and the Principality of Ponderosa. In fact, most of the world’s modern-day micronations are to be found in Australia!

So what makes for a great Australian? No one really knows. No one can quite put his or her finger on what makes for an Australian in the first place – not if they really thought about it. But one thing is for sure: people in Australia, whether they consider themselves Australians or not, really prize their independence above all else!

The Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship On The High Seas To Quebec

August 17, 2010
Filed under: Travel — freetraffic @ 4:22 am

The first Jeanie Johnston was built in the year 1847 in Quebec Canada and was subsequently purchased in Liverpool by the merchant John Donovan and Sons of Tralee, Co.Kerry, Ireland. The Great Famine was at its height in Ireland at that time, causing many of the starving native population to go abroad. Donovan’s company ran a successful business between 1847 and 1855 ferrying exiles from Ireland to North America and returning with timber for European countries.

The ship’s first voyage started on 24th April 1848 when she set out from Blennerville to Quebec in Canada with almost 200 passengers. During the following years the Jeanie Johnston made 16 more voyages to North America transporting over 2,500 emigrants. This ship was one of the better run emigrant ships – they were called ‘coffin ships’ because so many passengers died.

In overcrowded conditions in the steerage of the ship, up to 300 scared people were herded together. Many had never seen a ship and were totally unaware what was in store for them, and the only thing which they had in common was their resolve to flee from the horrors of the famine.

Accommodation on board was simple, made up of bare planks, where people were confined together, with four adults (and even more children) being squashed into a 6 feet space. Despite the 50 day voyage in very cramped and difficult conditions, there were no fatalities on the Jeanie Johnston.

The replica Jeanie Johnston was designed by Fred Walker, former Chief Naval Architect with the Maritime Museum in England.

Work on the ship began in 1993 in a custom built shipyard at Blennerville near Tralee and was finalized in 2002. The ship constructed from larch on oak framework, and was constructed with materials and design as close to the original as possible. However there were some differences which had to be included to comply with modern safety standards.

A multinational crew of young people, coming from Ireland North and South from both sections of the community, the USA, Canada and many other countries, built the new ship under the watchful eye of experienced shipwrights. This progressive venture demonstrated how young people from different backgrounds could co-operate in peace.

Since the ship was completed in 2002, the Jeanie Johnston has paid a visit to most of the ports in Ireland, including Dublin and Belfast, and has been greeted with enthusiasm by the many visitors who have toured the ship and understood what life for the emigrants was like.

In 2003 Jeanie Johnston left the home port of Fenit in County Kerry to embark on a 9 week journey to recreate the voyage of famine times. It landed in Florida on April 15th and continued on a tour of ports along the East Coast of the USA and Canada before to returning to Ireland in October. In the years 2004 and 2005 the Jeanie Johnston made many voyages around Ireland, Britain and the rest of Europe.

The Dublin Port Authority acquired the the ship in 2005 and designated it as a maritime museum. She is berthed at Dublin Docks and is open daily to visitors.

You get a really good impression of life on a famine ship on the tour.. The tour is very popular and visitors report that they get a great sense of the reality of life on board during that long trip to North America.
Visitors to Tralee can find Tralee B&B and Hotels in Tralee at Stay in Kerry
